Coal Town Public House

For my inaugural food adventure I wanted to find something new and exciting. After some digging through Yelp and Trip Advisor I stumbled on this gem I had not previously noticed.

Coal Town Public House is located in the Westhaven Town Center, Franklin, TN. It is a modern American grill with its own unique take on typical southern American fare. The menu was quite intriguing, I was interested in the Duck Fat Fries appetizer, the coal-braised Short Ribs, and the Grilled Chicken Pappardelle. They also boast about their giant Pork Chop.

Upon entering I felt very welcomed by the warm, clean, modern interior and the friendly staff. My server gave some great recommendations and did a great job giving me the run down of the menu, then pointed out a popular daily special which was a Chicken Pot Pie.

I don't typically go for pot pie's, but the neighboring table had it and I saw it was more of a deconstructed pot pie, it was the filling in a bowl like a light stew with a pastry puff disc as a dipping item rather than a pie casing. I was extremely satisfied with it. The flavor of both the filling and the pastry were perfect, well seasoned, nice mix of flavors and completed each other very well.

I also added a side dish of fried Brussels, they had candied bacon and a light maple syrup. They tasted more like grilled Brussels, which I love, and the were a nice addition to the pot pie.

My server recommended a nice S'mores Cheesecake which was a special for the night. I am not a huge fan of marshmallow but was assured it was not a typical marshmallow texture. I was pleasantly surprised, the overall flavor was more like a light whipped peanut butter mousse. It was so decadent and perfectly delicious.

I got into a conversation with the neighboring table and they spoke very highly about the restaurant as well. They suggested I return and try the Calamari appetizer and the Pork Chop. I also want to try their steak and the Chicken Pappardelle.

They also have a pizza restaurant attached to the same location, Coal Town Pizza. It smelled wonderful and I look forward to trying it in the future.

Final Thoughts

This was an excellent find and I 100% plan to return. The atmosphere and food were so good that I texted multiple people during my meal to tell them about it. I will definitely return many times to this wonderful spot.

On the weekends they have live music and the outdoor seating looks out over a nice lake. It will be an excellent place to visit on a nice spring or fall evening.

Currently they are open only for dinner and Sunday brunch, but they did mention they might be testing out lunch hours with a pared down menu soon.
